Application
The Single Burning Item (SBI) Test Apparatus is used to evaluate the fire reaction performance of flat building products when subjected to the thermal attack of a single burning item. It is applicable to construction products such as wall and ceiling linings, façade materials, and roofing products, and is a core method for the European fire classification of building products (Euroclasses A2, B, C, D under EN 13823 / EN 13501-1). It provides key parameters for judging a product’s fire behavior, including heat release, smoke production, lateral flame spread, and the occurrence of flaming droplets/particles.
Working Principle
- The specimen consists of two vertical wings mounted at right angles to form an inner corner. A burner (“main burner”) is positioned below the bottom corner of the specimen and exposes it to a flame. The flame is produced by the combustion of propane gas injected through a sandbox burner, providing a heat output of (30.7±2.0) kW.
- The performance of the specimen is assessed during the 20 min following ignition. The measured performance parameters are heat release, smoke production, horizontal (lateral) flame spread, and burning droplets/particles.
- A second burner (“auxiliary burner”), identical to the main burner but positioned away from the specimen, is used to measure the burner’s heat output for a short period before the main burner is ignited (for baseline/calibration).
- Some quantities rely on observation, such as ambient temperature, flue-gas temperature, and humidity. Others are measured automatically, including the pressure differential and, via sensors installed in the exhaust duct, the temperature in the duct, the gas (volume) flow, and the light attenuation (for smoke). These quantities are automatically recorded and used to calculate FIGRA, THR600s, SMOGRA, and TSP600s.

- The combustion chamber is built on an assembled, detachable frame (cabinet). The insulated exhaust duct, insulated collecting hood, and insulated collector adopt a double-layer insulation design to ensure the accuracy of data acquisition. The volumetric flow rate in the exhaust duct is automatically adjustable throughout the entire process.
- The combustion control system uses a dedicated solenoid valve.
